Who's Ripping off Whom? Why do brave commissioning editors tremble at the words, "It's going to be archive based"? Why does a 30" shot of a cow in a field from an archive house cost more than hiring a crew, finding a field and buying a cow? Are unscrupulous broadcasters making untold millions from wanton exploitation of programmes on the internet and what are the undreamt treasures hidden in VOD?
In a world where formats, portals, platforms and viewers are changing faster than the wheels on a slot machine, this session engages in a challenging debate between archive houses, broadcasters and the poor, old ‘producers in the middle.’ This session sets out on a mission to find what is the future of ‘The Archive Film’ and whether or not there is anything nasty in its past.

This program dives beneath the waters of Pearl Harbor to trace provocative new clues to one of the most tragic events of World War II—the sinking of the USS Arizona and the loss of more than 1000 lives. Join Melanie Wallace (Senior Producer of NOVA/WGBH), Kirk Wolfinger (Producer/Director, Lone Wolf Productions), and Jun Shioda (Producer/Director, NHK Japan) as they discuss the discovery of a group of Japanese midget subs in and around Pearl Harbor—which has raised questions about the battleship’s final hours. The making of this film is absolutely fascinating with its underwater investigation, moving testimonials from American and Japanese veterans, as well as the story of the co-production process between U.S. and Japanese filmmakers, representing both sides of history.
